There was plenty of interesting talking points to come out of the game, but the one that interests me the most is the discussion about the standard of the game. Some posters (here and elsewhere) opined that the game was a horrible display, and the standard of play across the Tasman was far better than what we saw at Homebush. I disagree. I thought the game was actually pretty good to watch, even if the first half was a little slow. The last 20 was absorbing, and it was telling that there was not the usual procession of older members out of the ground with 10 minutes to go.

But more than that I think people may have expected a little bit too much from the first game of the season. Round 1 is always a weekend of scrappy, physical slogs played by teams at 70 or 80% of what they are generally capable of doing. On top of that when was the last time a Reds/Tahs game was a free-flowing game? I think there may have been one back in the 60s, but it’s been lean since then. When you combine those two factors the game was always going to be a physical slogfest.

And as far as physical slogfests go I thought the standard was pretty good. There weren’t too many dropped balls, wayward kicks or missed tackles. Both defensive lines performed with aplomb, which is more than can be said for the Blues and Crusaders. I’m not saying this game was the game of the round, but I do think it was up there, and I expect both sides to be right in there at the business end of the season.

The upstart Jets will travel to Indianapolis to face league MVP Peyton Manning and the Colts with a spot in Super Bowl XLIV on the line.

Ironically enough, the Indianapolis Colts will have to go through the New York Jets, a team that they injected new life into in Week 16 when they rested their starters. The Jets have not looked back since then and come into this game with a lot of confidence. Here is a look at both teams and a preview of this Sunday's match-up.
New York Jets at a Glance

The Jets are a very talented team on both sides of the ball. They only finished the regular season at 9-7 but most of that was due to the inconsistent play of rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. Sanchez has played extremely well in the last four games, though, turning the ball over just once. Sanchez has some nice weapons in receivers Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, and tight end Dustin Keller. The strength of the Jets offense, however, is their number one ranked running game. Thomas Jones had an excellent year and Shonn Green has come on late, giving the Jets a great one-two punch. The offensive line, which boasts three Pro-Bowlers (Alan Fanceca, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Furgeson), is also a big reason for their success. Defensively, the Jets are the best in the league. They have an excellent linebacking core with guys like David Harris, Bart Scott, and Calvin Pace. Their secondary is the best in the NFL against the pass led by shut-down corner Darelle Revis, and safeties Kerry Rhodes and Jim Leonhard.
Indianapolis Colts at a Glance

The Colts ended the season at 14-2, bypassing a chance at history by resting their starters late. They are led by the NFL Most Valuable Player in quarterback Peyton Manning. He had a huge year, throwing for 4500 yards and 33 touchdowns. Manning has a ton of weapons in the passing game including receivers Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, and tight end Dallas Clark. Their running game, though, is virtually non-existant. Defensively, the Colts are pretty average and are hurt by injuries, especially in their secondary. They do, however, boast two of the best pass rushers in the league in Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

Players to Watch in This Sunday's Jets/Colts Match-Up

In big games, the big stars will usually play well but it is often someone other than the usual suspects who makes the biggest plays. Here are some players to keep an eye on.

Jets: Offense - Dustin Keller - The second year tight end had a disappointing season where he was not as involved in the passing as was expected, but he has come alive in the playoffs, with a touchdown in each playoff game.

Defense - Kerry Rhodes - The Jets safety was a non-factor early in the season but has regained his old form after a mid-season benching. He has played his best ball in the last couple years late in the season, becoming a playmaker once again.

Colts: Offense - Pierre Garcon - The second year receiver was an explosive player for the Colts this year, averaging 16.3 yards a catch and totaling 765 yards receiving. With Darrelle Revis blanketing Reggie Wayne, Garcon could be a main target for Manning in this game.

Defense - Gary Brackett - The undersized, underrated linebacker had 99 tackles this season and his play will be critical if the Colts are to slow down the Jets running game.
The New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts AFC Championship Game This Sunday

There is no secret to what the Jets will try to do to win this game. They will run the football, play great defense, and hope that their rookie quarterback continues his good play, especially when it comes to not turning the ball over.

As for the Colts, they will try to do what they do best. They will let Manning throw the ball to his many weapons. Manning, though, is just a .500 quarterback in his career in the post-season and has struggled against great defenses, most notably, the once great Patriots defense led by defensive guru Bill Belichek. The Jets also have a great defense led by another defensive guru in Rex Ryan. The Jets, with their exotic blitzes, should be able to rattle Manning enough to keep the Colts high-powered offense in check.

When the Jets are on offense, the Jets will stick with the run, wearing the defense down, and chances, are, they will eventually break a long touchdown run like they have the last two weeks courtesy of Shonn Green. The Jets will throw in some play-action and even if the defense gets pressure on Sanchez, he is very good at scrambling out of the pocket and throwing on the run, something he actually does better than his counterpart, Peyton Manning.

The Jets as a team, have a swagger that this organization has not had in a long time, and it comes from their confident head coach, Rex Ryan. This franchise, seemingly cursed over the years, is on a magical carpet ride this year, and the feeling here is that it will continue this Sunday as they are anxious to get the respect that they did not get when they beat the Colts in the regular season.

New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts

The upstart Jets will travel to Indianapolis to face league MVP Peyton Manning and the Colts with a spot in Super Bowl XLIV on the line.

Ironically enough, the Indianapolis Colts will have to go through the New York Jets, a team that they injected new life into in Week 16 when they rested their starters. The Jets have not looked back since then and come into this game with a lot of confidence. Here is a look at both teams and a preview of this Sunday's match-up.
New York Jets at a Glance

The Jets are a very talented team on both sides of the ball. They only finished the regular season at 9-7 but most of that was due to the inconsistent play of rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. Sanchez has played extremely well in the last four games, though, turning the ball over just once. Sanchez has some nice weapons in receivers Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, and tight end Dustin Keller. The strength of the Jets offense, however, is their number one ranked running game. Thomas Jones had an excellent year and Shonn Green has come on late, giving the Jets a great one-two punch. The offensive line, which boasts three Pro-Bowlers (Alan Fanceca, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Furgeson), is also a big reason for their success. Defensively, the Jets are the best in the league. They have an excellent linebacking core with guys like David Harris, Bart Scott, and Calvin Pace. Their secondary is the best in the NFL against the pass led by shut-down corner Darelle Revis, and safeties Kerry Rhodes and Jim Leonhard.
Indianapolis Colts at a Glance

The Colts ended the season at 14-2, bypassing a chance at history by resting their starters late. They are led by the NFL Most Valuable Player in quarterback Peyton Manning. He had a huge year, throwing for 4500 yards and 33 touchdowns. Manning has a ton of weapons in the passing game including receivers Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, and tight end Dallas Clark. Their running game, though, is virtually non-existant. Defensively, the Colts are pretty average and are hurt by injuries, especially in their secondary. They do, however, boast two of the best pass rushers in the league in Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

Players to Watch in This Sunday's Jets/Colts Match-Up

In big games, the big stars will usually play well but it is often someone other than the usual suspects who makes the biggest plays. Here are some players to keep an eye on.

Jets: Offense - Dustin Keller - The second year tight end had a disappointing season where he was not as involved in the passing as was expected, but he has come alive in the playoffs, with a touchdown in each playoff game.

Defense - Kerry Rhodes - The Jets safety was a non-factor early in the season but has regained his old form after a mid-season benching. He has played his best ball in the last couple years late in the season, becoming a playmaker once again.

Colts: Offense - Pierre Garcon - The second year receiver was an explosive player for the Colts this year, averaging 16.3 yards a catch and totaling 765 yards receiving. With Darrelle Revis blanketing Reggie Wayne, Garcon could be a main target for Manning in this game.

Defense - Gary Brackett - The undersized, underrated linebacker had 99 tackles this season and his play will be critical if the Colts are to slow down the Jets running game.
The New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts AFC Championship Game This Sunday

There is no secret to what the Jets will try to do to win this game. They will run the football, play great defense, and hope that their rookie quarterback continues his good play, especially when it comes to not turning the ball over.

As for the Colts, they will try to do what they do best. They will let Manning throw the ball to his many weapons. Manning, though, is just a .500 quarterback in his career in the post-season and has struggled against great defenses, most notably, the once great Patriots defense led by defensive guru Bill Belichek. The Jets also have a great defense led by another defensive guru in Rex Ryan. The Jets, with their exotic blitzes, should be able to rattle Manning enough to keep the Colts high-powered offense in check.

When the Jets are on offense, the Jets will stick with the run, wearing the defense down, and chances, are, they will eventually break a long touchdown run like they have the last two weeks courtesy of Shonn Green. The Jets will throw in some play-action and even if the defense gets pressure on Sanchez, he is very good at scrambling out of the pocket and throwing on the run, something he actually does better than his counterpart, Peyton Manning.

The Jets as a team, have a swagger that this organization has not had in a long time, and it comes from their confident head coach, Rex Ryan. This franchise, seemingly cursed over the years, is on a magical carpet ride this year, and the feeling here is that it will continue this Sunday as they are anxious to get the respect that they did not get when they beat the Colts in the regular season.
